How a "free" WhatsApp app for Shopify ends up charging you

Why a Shopify WhatsApp app on a free plan still bills you: usage charges, billing cycles, charges after uninstall, and how to read the pricing page.

"I am on the free plan, so why is a WhatsApp app charging me?" is one of the most common complaints in Shopify App Store reviews of WhatsApp tools, and it is rarely a billing error. In almost every case the listing did say the app could charge; it said so in the words "usage charges apply", in a per-message unit price further down the pricing page, or in the small print about 30-day billing cycles. This guide walks through the four ways a free-to-install WhatsApp app produces a real invoice, shows you where each one is disclosed on a Shopify pricing page, explains what Shopify itself does when you uninstall, and describes how Beacon Messenger's flat plans are built so that a busy month cannot become an unexpected charge.

What merchants report

The pattern is visible on the 1- and 2-star reviews of SuperLemon. One reviewer describes "getting billed without any usage and being on the free plan", later adding that support "linked all charges to the automation in the app". Another wrote on 8 April 2026, in Spanish, that the app charged "9 dolares de mas sin autorización". A reviewer on 1 April 2024 asked why they "were charged when the app was uninstalled in trial period", and on 18 June 2026 a merchant reported they "continued being charged monthly through Shopify Billing" for an app that was no longer loading. On the WhatFlow review page, a merchant wrote on 6 May 2026 "i have deleted this app 1 month ago now has charged please issue a refund", and another on 29 January 2026 said they were "being charged 15$ monthly" while their WhatsApp account was disabled. These are the merchants' own accounts, not audited billing records, but the same four mechanisms explain every one of them.

Mechanism 1: "free to install" is not a free plan

Shopify lets an app list itself as free to install while charging for what you do inside it. The App Store signals this with the phrase "Usage charges apply" directly under the app name. WhatFlow's listing, checked on 28 September 2026, reads "Free to install. Usage charges apply. Free trial available." Its Free plan is described as "$0 / month, plus usage charges", with the first 50 messages sent free and $0.01 for each message after that; its paid tiers work the same way above a higher included quantity. That is a legitimate pricing model, and it is disclosed, but it means the word Free describes the subscription line only. Every order confirmation, shipping update and abandoned-cart reminder beyond the included quantity is a billable unit, and an automation that fires on every order will cross the quantity as soon as the store has a good month.

Mechanism 2: the per-message price is on top of Meta's price

For apps that use the official WhatsApp Business Platform, Meta separately charges your Meta business account per delivered template message, at rates that depend on the template category and the customer's country. Some apps pass that through; others add their own margin on top. SuperLemon's listing states under its $19.99 and $29.99 plans that "WhatsApp rates start from 0.015 USD", and its pricing footer says "Recurring and usage-based charges are billed every 30 days." If your app collects WhatsApp fees through Shopify, you will see a usage line on your Shopify bill in addition to the subscription. If it collects them from a prepaid wallet or a card on file with the developer, they will not appear on your Shopify bill at all, and Shopify's help centre warns that "uninstalling the app from your Shopify admin doesn't cancel external charges" (Uninstalling apps).

Mechanism 3: billing cycles are per app, not per calendar month

Shopify documents that recurring app fees "start when you first approve the app and occur again at the start of each billing period", and that usage charges "are tied to a 30-day billing cycle specific to each app", which "might differ from Shopify's 30-day cycle" so that "usage charges from one app cycle might be distributed across two different Shopify subscription bills" (App charges on your Shopify bills). Two consequences follow. A charge can land on an invoice dated weeks after the messages were sent, which is why a merchant who uninstalled a month ago can still see a new line. And a free trial that ends on day 7 converts to a paid cycle on day 8 whether or not you opened the app again, which is how a store gets "charged during the trial" in their own perception while the developer's records show the trial had ended.

Mechanism 4: uninstalling stops future cycles, not the current one

Shopify's uninstall guidance is precise: "Uninstalling a paid app cancels future recurring charges, but you might still be billed for the current billing cycle. If you want to request a refund, contact the app developer before uninstalling" (Uninstalling apps). The same page notes that for usage-based apps a spending limit approved at install caps how much the app can charge per cycle, and that you can raise it from Settings > Apps. That approval screen, the one you clicked through on install, is where the maximum monthly exposure was agreed. If you never looked at the number, it is worth checking now for every app you have installed.

How to read a Shopify pricing page in two minutes

  1. Under the app name, read the pricing summary. "Free plan available" and "Free to install" mean different things; "Usage charges apply" means per-unit billing exists on at least one plan.
  2. Scroll to the Pricing section and look for the words "plus usage charges" under a plan price, then for a Cost per unit table. Note the included quantity and the unit price.
  3. Look for any external rate, such as "WhatsApp rates start from", and ask the developer whether it is billed through Shopify or separately.
  4. Read the footer line about billing frequency. "Recurring and usage-based charges are billed every 30 days" is Shopify's standard wording for apps with both kinds of charge.
  5. Before you install, note the spending limit shown on the approval screen. After you install, note the date, because that is when each 30-day cycle starts.
  6. If you are already being charged, go to Settings > Billing, open the invoice, and match each app line to a plan or usage item. Contact the developer for a refund before uninstalling, as Shopify recommends.

How Beacon Messenger bills

Beacon Messenger has four plans, all flat: Free at $0 with 50 messages a month, Starter at $9.99 with 500, Growth at $24.99 with 2,500 and Pro at $59.99 with 10,000. The plan is chosen and billed through Shopify's hosted App Pricing page, so the charge appears as a subscription on your Shopify bill and there is no card on file with us and no prepaid wallet. There is no usage line item on any plan and no per-message price anywhere in the app or the listing. The cap is enforced in code: before each automated message is sent, the app checks the count of messages sent this month against the plan's limit, and when the limit is reached the message is skipped and written to the delivery log with the reason "quota exceeded" instead of being sent. Skipped messages are never counted, never billed and never queued for later; sending resumes at the start of the next month or when you upgrade. The plan page shows the running count, the percentage of the cap used, and how many messages were skipped this month.

Meta's own WhatsApp fees still apply, because Beacon Messenger sends through the official Cloud API using your WhatsApp Business Account. Those fees are billed by Meta to your Meta business account, not through the app, and the Cloud API notifications guide explains how to estimate them from Meta's published rates. When you uninstall, Shopify's rules about the current billing cycle still apply, and the app deletes your shop's settings, message log and queue on the uninstall webhook so nothing continues to send. Current prices are on the pricing section of the landing page.

Frequently asked questions

I am on a free plan. Can a Shopify app still charge me?

Yes, if the plan is "free to install" with usage charges. The listing will show "Usage charges apply" and a per-unit price on the pricing page. A plan described only as "Free" with no usage line cannot generate a charge through Shopify.

Why was I charged after uninstalling a WhatsApp app?

Shopify cancels future recurring charges on uninstall but may still bill the current cycle, and usage recorded before uninstall is added to the next invoice. Charges collected outside Shopify, such as a prepaid message wallet, are not affected by uninstalling at all.

Where do I see what an app charged me?

In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Billing and open the invoice. App subscriptions and app usage appear as separate lines, each named after the app. Usage from one app cycle can be split across two Shopify invoices.

What happens in Beacon Messenger when I reach the monthly limit?

The next automated message is skipped, logged with the reason quota exceeded, and not billed. Nothing is queued for later. Sending resumes at the start of the next month or immediately after an upgrade through Shopify's plan page.

Does Beacon Messenger charge for WhatsApp messages?

No. The plan price is the only charge from the app. Meta bills delivered template messages to your own Meta business account at its published rates, which you can review in WhatsApp Manager.
